Description | Looking east from the north corner of Onomichi-cho. The large camphor trees are facing the road on the Ujina Line streetcar route (west) of Kokutaiji Temple at the north end of Komachi. When the Ujina Line streetcar tracks were laid, the tracks were slightly diverted and the sidewalks were raised to protect these trees beloved by citizens. But the trees could not withstand the bomb's energy, and they collapsed in the blast and ignited in the ensuing fire, burning to death. Afterward, the old camphor trees were dug up from their roots and stored in a furniture store in Hiroshima as precious wood; they gained new life as engravings by the seal engraver Shuntei Adachi. |
