Description | In this area, the center of the bustling shopping district right before the atomic bombing, most buildings were made from wood and were completely burned down. Non-wooden buildings barely remained standing. On the left, the small structure with a gabled roof is Ebisu Shrine, which was rebuilt among the burned ruins of the shrine in November, 1945. Behind the shrine is Fukuya Department Store. To the right of the department store are the new and main buildings of the Chugoku Shimbun. To the rear of Nagarekawa Street is Hiroshima Nagarekawa Church, which suffered devastating damage, but had begun restoration work, and Sunday service in the spring of 1946. To the rear of the church is Mt. Ushita. |
