Description | Looking south-south-east at Honkawa Bridge from the roof of Honkawa National Elementary School, 410 meters southwest of the hypocenter. The bridge became unsafe to cross after wind pressure moved the bridge girder, and a bridge pier disconnected from its abutment. Although a plank was placed on the bridge as a quick fix, the bridge completely collapsed due to the Makurazaki Typhoon in September. In the background, Shin-Ohashi Bridge which had also suffered damage with its railings destroyed, also collapsed due to the Makurazaki Typhoon in September. Present-day West Peace Bridge spans the river at about the same location as Shin-Ohashi Bridge did. On the left bank, from left: Hiroshima City Hall and the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital. In the background is Ninoshima Island. |
