Description Looking southeast at the Hiroshima Higashi (East) Police Station, where temporary offices of the Hiroshima Prefectural government were set up on August 7, shortly after the atomic bombing. Goods piled up in front of the building, which escaped the fire thanks to the desperate efforts of the police officers, and the people who gathered there can be seen. Under the leadership of Genshin Takano, then governor of Hiroshima, a relief operation was organized and canned food for 200,000 people was released. Volunteer fire companies that arrived from the suburban counties disposed of the dead bodies and distributed food. The building had been lent to the Hiroshima Higashi Police Station by the Geibi Bank in July 1945. The letters "Geibi Bank" can be read on the door next to the standing sign that says "Higashi Police Station." The building was photographed diagonally from across a street with streetcar tracks. The object in the right foreground appears to be a car door mirror.
