Description | Looking east from the riverbank on the upstream side of the west end of Aioi Bridge. From left: Hiroshima Prefectural Commerce Association; Hiroshima Electric Railway's Yagurashita Substation on the riverbank in front of the Association; Aioi Bridge; and the central dome of Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (the A-bomb Dome). The Aioi Bridge over the Honkawa River is a distinctive T-shaped bridge, which was the target of the atomic bombing. The bridge's parapets and roadbed were destroyed by the blast, and the outer panels of the upstream trusses were torn off. The logs piled in the foreground were washed down here from upstream by the Makurazaki Typhoon on September 17. |
