Description | In the burned area in the left foreground used to stand the main store of Kawamoto Shokai in Sarugaku-cho; Hiroshi Ogawa’s residence; and Ishii Photo Studio. The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (the A-bomb Dome) is in the center left, and Fuel Hall to its right at the rear. The river behind Sarugaku-cho is the Motoyasu River. The closer bridge is the Motoyasu Bridge, and further down is the Yorozuyo Bridge. In the back, from left: Hiroshima City Hall, Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital; and the Chugoku Haiden Otemachi substation. In the Nakajima District, Mitsui Life Insurance Company, Hiroshima Branch; and Fujii Shoji. Along the horizon from left: Motoujina; Ninoshima Island; and Ebayama Hill. Shigeo Hayashi, then 27, was a still photographer in the physics group of the investigation team organized by the Special Committee for the Investigation of Atomic Bomb Damages. From October 1 to 10, he took photos in Hiroshima, amid rumors of the threat of residual radiation. In order to convey the devastation of Hiroshima caused by a single bomb, he took a 360-degree panorama in 16 shots from the observation tower of the Hiroshima Prefectural Commerce Association (today’s Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry), located 260 meters from the hypocenter. |
