Description Looking east from in front of the Fukuya Department Store new and old buildings. The old buildings is on the left, and the new building, the Chugoku Shimbun newspaper, and the Nippon Kangyo Bank Hiroshima branch are on the right. The entrance to the Fukuya Department Store (new building) is covered with a bamboo screen. The interior was completely destroyed by the atomic bomb. From August 17, an increasing number of hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) began to have bloody stools and were taken to the second and third floors of the Fukuya new building as assumed dysentery patients. The floors were used as a temporary infectious disease hospital for about a month until the symptoms of radiation sickness were understood. People dressed in monpe (work clothes) and national uniforms can be seen on the street with streetcar tracks heading toward Hiroshima Station.
