| Description | View of the Chugoku Shimbun newspaper’s new building from northwest to southeast. The Chugoku Shimbun’s main building is next to it, with the entrance to the Nippon Kangyo Bank Hiroshima branch next to it. Also visible on the outbound streetcar track is the wreckage of the 400-class streetcar (No. 421 or 430) that was exposed to the bomb in front of the Chugoku Shimbun. This streetcar was moved to the opposite, north side of the sidewalk relatively quickly. In the same instant as the bomb’s flash, the glass windows of the the seven-story reinforced concrete building were blown out, and the building was shaken so violently that it seemed as if it would collapse. Flames erupted from the windows, all the newspaper publishing equipment was destroyed, and the company building was gutted by fire, with only the outer walls remaining. |
