| Description | The large torii gate of Hiroshima Gokuku Shrine. View from east to northwest. The tablet hung on the back side (north) of the torii gate was blown off by the blast, but the tablet on the other side, facing the hypocenter did not fall—probably because it was pressed down from the frontal blast. In the rear to the left is the shrine’s main building, which was made of wood. It burned to the ground, leaving only its stone base. The granite tamagaki fence surrounding the precincts of the shrine, lanterns, guardian dog statues and the torii gate have shadowy burn marks due to the strong heat rays. They were used to calculate the height of the explosion of the A-bomb and the hypocenter. |
