From the west end of Motoyasu Bridge (Nakajima-honmachi), looking east. To the left in the rear beyond the river, is Shima Hospital, located at the hypocenter. In the center is the Hiroshima branch of Chiyoda Life Insurance Company. The head office of Geibi Bank, the Hiroshima branch of Norinchukin Bank, and the Hiroshima branch of Sumitomo Bank are to the right. The mountains in the rear are, from the right: Mt. Futaba, Mt. Onaga, Mt. Gosasozan, and so on. Motoyasu Bridge is located almost directly beneath the A-bomb’s detonation point, and was hit by the blast from nearly directly above. Its parapets on the upstream side fell into the upstream side of the river, and all parapets on the downstream side dropped into the downstream side of the river. Each of the main pillar's hibukuro (where the stone lantern's fire would be lit), either fell, or were shifted to the left or the right. Except for its stone base, the main pillar in the left foreground (Nakajima-cho, right bank) fell to the west. |
