| Description | Looking north toward the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (A-bomb Dome) from near the Hiroshima Post Office. Aioi Bridge can be seen in the background. The hall was designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel and opened as the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall in 1915. The prefecture’s products and specialties were tested and exhibited there, and it was also used as a museum and art gallery. As the war intensified, the hall ceased its operations in 1944 and was used as an office for a company involved in the rationing of lumber. The building was destroyed in the bombing, leaving only the steel frame of the dome and parts of its walls. All of the people inside are believed to have been killed. |
