| Description | Remnants of a burned-out car on the grounds of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (A-bomb Dome). This photo was taken looking in the northeast direction. A fountain and part of a wall of the hall can be seen. The hall was designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel and opened as the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition Hall in 1915. The prefecture’s products and specialties were tested and exhibited there, and it was also used as a museum and art gallery. As the war intensified, the hall ceased its operations in 1944 and was used as an office for a company involved in the rationing of lumber. The building was destroyed in the bombing, leaving only the steel frame of the dome and parts of its walls. All of the people inside at the time are believed to have been killed. |
