The remnants of the Imperial Japanese Army Headquarters, situated in the Honmaru main enclosure during the Sino-Japanese War in 1894, was designated a national historic site in 1926. The castle tower was designated a national treasure in 1931. All of the castle buildings were destroyed or burned to the ground in the bombing, along with most of the military facilities. |
